Default Video out of Firewire - DIGIDESIGN PLEASE ANSWER!!

Hi,

I've asked this question once before, so this time, please could someone at Digi answer it?

Does 7.3.1 LE on Windows XP support playing DV out of the FireWire port?

When you right-click the video window, one of the options available is to play out of the firewire port. If you select that, an error message comes up to say that no compatible device is connected. This would lead me to believe that if I connect a Canopus box, then it will work. Is this correct?

If not, WHY NOT?

If Sonar can play play DV out of the firewire port, why can't ProTools?

Please please Digidesign, someone give us a definitive answer!

Alan

I'm pretty sure this is NOT working yet for Windows. I've also been waiting for this feature, meanwhile my Canopus sits idle... Digi?

There is a reply in this thread from Gordon Lyon at Digidesign.

Quote:
Please allow me to clarify: The text in the What's New in LE doc is a simple, if unfortunate, cut & paste error. On Pro Tools HD XP, you can route video out the FireWire port to an Avid video peripheral (Mojo, Mojo SDI or AVoption|V10). This is a capability of the Avid video engine; QuickTime still does not support FireWire output on XP.

For Pro Tools LE, there is still no capability of routing QT out the FireWire port. However, if your desire is simply to get video output to an NTSC or PAL monitor, you could look into monitor cards such as the Matrox Parhelia APVe, which has 2 DVI outs plus a composite video out. Though we have not tested it here, this PCI card should have the extra advantage of not suffering the latency inherent in FireWire video peripherals.

Please understand that, when we release an update as extensive as Pro Tools 7.3, there are literally thousands of pages of documentation which are touched, and errors are inevitable. We will have this one corrected as soon as possible.

Thanks, Gordon

Well, as stated in that thread, it's pretty damned stupid to have an option available on the menus that they know will never work.

And I'll repeat what I've said in that thread as well -

WHY CAN'T PROTOOLS DO IT WHEN OTHER SOFTWARE CAN?

COME ON DIGIDESIGN, STOP BEING SUCH SLAVES TO APPLE.

STEVE JOBS DOESN'T CARE ABOUT DIGIDESIGN, SO WHY DO YOU CONTINUALLY MAKE US GIVE HIM MONEY?

Hello. The reason other software can do it is because they either do not use QuickTime at all or use other things besides QuickTime for video playback. Since Pro Tools only uses QuickTime exclusively, and since Apple arbitrarily goes out of their way to exclude that functionality out of the Windows version of QuickTime, that's how we arrive at the situation for Pro Tools LE Windows.

For me this is such an old battle that I no longer get worked up over it. It's a silly pissing match between Apple and Microsoft and Digidesign's shortsightedness for only using QuickTime. We have been asking for a solution for about 4 years or so, maybe longer. I don't think it will ever change. As mentioned in that thread above, the Matrox cards work very well, in some instances better than DV out of Firewire.

when I wrote exxactly the same opinion they banned my account and removed all the threads where my posts appeared.
You are absolutely right: qtime is pita when you are on windows and it's a complete miss when yu are on Macintosh.

DIGI: I didn't pay you for support to a badly written Apple port, just make the video Windows-Native.

I wouldn't mind so much if it were an option that was unlocked with DV Toolkit.

Come on Digi - PC's have vastly overtaken Macs now - it's time you kept up!
