Default Re: Does Boom Realy suck this bad?

Why do people say Boom is free ?

I can't se it anywhere on Digidesigns site where I can download it for free or as a standalone RTAS plugin. So calling it free is inncorect!

I't part of the PT8 package and that's that, so stop calling it free!

rudyrhythmz - THANK GOD!

You said everything I wanted to say. What is so wrong with Boom?

Yes, adding your own samples would be cool, but as has already been said, you can't on an 808, 909 and so on and that didn't stop them from becoming a classic and at a far higher cost than Boom!!!! It seems to me that most people wanted it to be like MOTU's BPM or NI's MASCHINE instead of a retro drum machine.

If you create the same number of mono tracks as Boom has sound locations (which is 10), select an unused bus on the track you have Boom inserted on, set the input of the tracks you created as the bus you routed Boom to (first of the mono tracks, Boom bus L, second of the tracks Boom bus R and so on), go to Boom, hard pan the kick left, the snare hard right and so on, mute the remaining sounds leaving just the first two sounding and then set the first two of your created tracks to record. Once you've done that, mute the first two and un-mute the next two and so on...

This way you can lay two sounds down to two audio tracks at a time and then you will be able to mix them as if they were individual outs from Boom. Yes, I know it's not as good as Boom having individual outs from the beginning, but at least there is a way to do what you want which is better than having the plugin running in real time with the track anyway.

There is a video on the AIR Blog that shows this.

Another solution to track separation rather than using Boom and printing to each track is to use the Instrument patches in Xpand2 and use 4 separate MIDI channels for each of the 4 available patches...kick, snare, hi-hat, crash for example...out of one instance of Xpand2. A bit larger sound library as well.

You can then use the MIDI editor for step sequencing it like a drum machine or just quantize your live playing...it won't give the same swing or dynamics that Boom might, but it's one option if you don't have your timing down.
