Also place the mic at nose or eye level, instead of directly in line with the mouth. That helps more for pops than Esses though... Another great trick for pops is the "pencil" trick. Tape a pencil to the windscreen of the mic so it is centered over the diaphragm. It acts as a windbreak for the mic diaphragm but doesn't change the tonality of the singer at all.

Ooooh, cause I though the pencil trick was when you make the singer put a pencil in their mouth, bite down on it, and then enunciate the entire song... only to remove the pencil right before singing - like taking the weights off a baseball bat.

At Motown we used Neumann U-67s, an SM2, occasionally a U-47 and in the late '60s almost all KM-86s for vocals. To the best of my knowledge we never owned a 667a and the last vocals we recorded at United happened several years before the 667a became available.

I'v tried this some times, but I can't get a decent sound out

I know. And getting artists to inhale isn't normally a problem, but singing usually isn't involved.

We did a lot of work for Motown/Jobete with the Holland brothers producing. Our U47 fet was the big hit back then.
