Steve,
I usually post this site when someone asks, although I don't 'tweak' XP myself. I leave it as is, and PT works perfectly for me. Only once did I have a BTD problem, and only then did I disable my running processes temporarily in 'Run/msconfig' til the bounce was done.
So I'm just saying, be careful and keep up with anything you disable.

Personally, I only recommend 4 tweaks.

1. A permanent swap file 1024MB or smaller (or none)
2. Priority set to Background Services
3. Turn System Restore off for your Audio Drive(s)
4. Turn off Automatic Windows Updates

If you want a snappier looking interface you might set Windows visual effect to best performance setting.

Most of the tweaks I've seen for WinXP seem to do little or nothing to actually enhance a system's performance. I've tried 'em all, and I end up only using the 4 tweaks listed here. I even leave my visual effects set to best appearance.
