Default Need Battery help....

During recording, is there a way I can record into the instrument track just by triggering the Battery cells with the mouse?

An instrument track is not an Audio track. Why not just record onto an audio track? Just bus it out.

Quite often, any plugin VI that has some kind of button or switch to trigger sounds is really just there to preview the sounds. Those switches don't actually send out any MIDI, which would need to happen for you to record.

Does Battery have any MIDI outputs? If it does, you might be able to get it to work

The signal appears in the meter levels both on the track and in the mixer views.... I figure you're going to tell me that this is just the audio signal and not the MIDI one, but surely there's a way....

If it is an instrument track then the main meter (mix window) only monitors audio.

If you have the MIDI part of an instrument track visible (go to Views>Mix window views... and make sure "Instruments" is checked), then there is a MIDI activity meter up in that area.. That would need to bounce around, too..

but wouldn't it be really nice to record one sound at a time, during loop playback with MIDI Merge and Input Quantize enabled?

Instead of using a controller, why wouldn't I be able to trigger each sound on-screen with the mouse in these modes?
....especially because of Battery being a drum sampler.

There are programs that allow you to do this, it's just not built in to ProTools.

Like I said, the VI programmers would have to create some kind of explicit MIDI output from the VI, and seeing how it isn't a common feature, they must not prioritize it too highly.

Here's a Virtual MIDI keyboard program that costs $30:

There are freeware apps out there too, depending on your platform..

Thanks for that.... I'll be checking utils like this out.

I'm wanting to do this on a laptop, so that I don't have to carry a MIDI controller around with me as well.
