Default custom cable maker in Washington DC

Does anybody know of a good cheap place to go to get mic cables made? I've been reading around and have read about people buying mogami and neutrik connectors and just assembling it themselves. I don't think I am capable enough, but does anybody know of a place that would do that in the DC area? (inteldoc, spkguitar or anybody?)

Just go buy pre-made cables. By the time you pay someone to actually build cables for you, it will be as expensive as buying good quality ones. Several companies offer Mogami wire and (I can't believe I'm saying this) the mid-priced Monster cables as quite nice as well. Check your pro-audio dealers as one in Nashville sells Mogami branded cables.

Actually, now that I think about it, if you are going to be in the recording biz, you better start learning about maintenance anyway. Any engineer worth his salt in the 70's and 80's had to know how to align a tape machine so building mic cables is maintenance 101. Heat up that iron and stop paying others to do simple stuff you should know anyway.

hahah ouch, although thanks for the advice. I have never been very good with wiring, but I will look into it, although I was hoping to have a little help from a professional in the area until i figured out what i was doing.

it's true, it is a really good thing to know how to build your own cables
I just bought 1,000 Feet of Canare cable and some Mogami Snake cable and a ton of Nuetrik connectors and it is really easy to make cable's.

But if you really don't want to do them yourself I would say just buy them pre made from a company that has a lifetime gaurrantee

thanks for the reply. on an unrelated note, i was actually looking at one of your posts from a while back regarding the alesis AI-3. did you ever get this unit and some preamps? I am thinking about doing the same thing. right now I have a behringer ada8000, but i am getting a bunch of preamps and dont want to have to degrade it by running it through the behringer pres. i was trying to see your website, but the links weren't coming up....

I get all of mine made out of a shop that Guitar Center (fairfax) uses. Talk to Ben, and he can get them made up. Not too bad. All mogami with Nuetrik connectors. Good stuff.

Please take on offense at my comment. I just think that we all need to learn some basic skills so we can call ourselves pro. Maybe there are studios or sound companies in your area that would take on an apprentice for a few months. Nothing like "the trenches" to teach several important skills. Too bad you aren't near Nashville...
