Re: recording live
Direct outs from the mixer if it has it. Most boards have these as pre fader post eq

Re: recording live
Some mixers also have TRS insert jacks and a TS cable can be plugged partway in(1 click) to get a pre-fade signal. Some mixers have sub groups. Some may have unused AUX sends. It all depends on what mixer is being used. Some systems have a mic splitter that allows you to grab mic signals BEFORE the console(so you need your own preamps). See why details matter

Re: recording live
Yep. Let us know what gear will be used and we can probably make some usable suggestions.

Re: recording live
yea my apologies guys, I actually do not have a personal mixer of my own I use the in-house mixers of the venue usually (I just did my first FULL gig yesterday) and so I was wondering how it could be done but yea it had aux outs and couple of line outs as well. So I should use those line outs or aux outs to record it into something else?

Re: recording live
So where do these direct outs plug into? like some sort of audio box that can hold all the audio outputs? sorry for sounding nooby I know my production gear but some live mixing and recording is a bit out of my range.
thanks anyways |

Re: recording live
Yes - direct outs into the audio interface and that's what you record.
Best thing to do is get the model of the board from the venue. Download the manual and download the knowledge (ie read the manual)

Depends on what you have to work with and how you want to go about it.
For the most flexibility in mixing it later, getting each mic into an interface separately will allow you to completely mix everything later. For this you would to use direct outs on the mixer, or the insert jacks as mentioned, or even a splitter snake if available. A few other ways but those are the most common. You would also need an interface with enough I/O to handle the job. If you don't have an interface with enough inputs, you could take submix outs and record those. Provided your setting up submixes (drums, guitars, keys, lead vocal, BGV's, fx, ect). Exactly how you approached it would depend on gear. Number of submixes available and inputs on interface. You could also just take a feed of the main outs and record just that. Or if you have a spare stereo aux, you could set up a "record" mix. Lots of ways to get the job done.

Re: recording live
Or you can use aux and bus outputs.
Some of the inputs send them thru auxiliar sends, some others thru different outputs. But if you have a sound card that have as many instruments as you have, why don't you use that card as input for all, and from that card outputs to the mixer? And set the card as monitoring all the inputs and send them to the outputs directly?

Re: recording live
Don't forget to plan for/setup some crowd mics. (The exact number, location, type and configuration being subject to the particulars of the venue.)
You should also consider getting one or more submix ( es ) of the main effects used by the foh mixer. If he is good and knows the act well, this could turn out being useful later, integrating easily in a remix as it will match the crowd mics and stage leakage. In any case, a simple fx submix can be a useful mix reference.
