Re: Windows 8
I had PTLE8 running on the Win8 Consumer Preview. Other than the GUI madness Win8 brings a myriad of small performance improvements in nearly every area. Although not enough to make it worth updating in my opinion. All of the advice in the thread so far been spot on. Unless you Have to update I would hang on to Win7 for your DAW.

Re: Windows 8
The Windows 8 Upgrade tool didn't red flag Pro Tools MP9 as a problem. So after upgrading to Windows 8, I clicked on it and Windows 8 crashed to a Blue screen. Upgrading Pro Tools MP9 to 9.05 rendered Windows 8 unable to boot. I had to run system restore to bring it back to Pro Tools MP9. It still crashes when I attempt to run it, so I can confirm that Pro Tools MP9 crashes Windows 8. I'm willing to bet that Pro Tools 10 won't do that. I have no doubt AVID would suggest a Pro Tools 10 upgrade. For $399, I don't think so. I'm running Cubase 6.5 on my Macbook Pro as my DAW, with a TASCAM US1800 as my audio interface, and that works great, so I've essentially bailed from Pro Tools MP9. Considering that AVID sold off M-Audio, there won't be any more Pro Tools MP upgrades, so Bye Bye Avid. You just lost another customer.

Have you turned off UAC? Did you exempt Pro Tools from Windows Defender? Were your iLok drivers and interface drivers up-to-date? Did you launch with Run as Admin?

Re: Windows 8
All,
I've just performed an installation of Win8, PT8 and an original MBox. I can't imagine that the install process would be anymore difficult with PT9? Take a look at a recent post of mine entitled "Windows 8" and let me know if you are aware of any further steps that may be required to get PT9 running. If you need any help, just let me know.
