The "real" Latency of Apollo
Hi,
i like the idea of the "no" Latency monitoring of the uad apollos. i own 2 units. but in my opinion it is not like UA told. the only way the console monitoring works fine is without plug ins. in this case you get the promised 1,1ms (96kHz) 2,3ms(44,1kHz) Latency. when i insert plug ins (no mastering high latency plugs). every plug in brings additional delay about 1ms. and that is to much for monitoring vocals, drums, etc. UA told me to turn off the IDC (input delay compensation of the console). but it makes absolute no sence to work with IDC off, because if you record more than 1 track at the same time the tracks are not synced. the tracks with console plugs are more delayed than the tracks with no plugs. only when IDC is turned on all tracks are on the right place in the DAW. but in this case the monitoring latency is much higher than 1,1(96kHz) / 2,3 ms(44,1kHz). its double high (with 4 plug ins) i am absolute disappointed, because the promissed workflow with 1,1 / 2,3 ms low latency monitoring with plug ins is not realizable for professional working. has someone tested / measured the real latency of the console? Re: The "real" Latency of Apollo
What about if your input track has no plugs, but delay compensation is on, and all the other pre-existing tracks have plugs? Most of the time I don't track with plugs on the input track. You can also probably find a way to send input signal to a reverb plug on a different aux channel, so the main channel you're recording doesn't go through that plug, but you can still get an image of space behind it.

Re: The "real" Latency of Apollo
Not to derail anything - because I too would be keen on knowing the answer to the OP question... but can we add...
With Apollo - lets say you really need to track through a VI in ProTools once a mix is humming along - what latency do you end up with if you don't bounce it to a stereo mix and make all the tracks inactive? ( I have seen posts implying that it is big (10 to 20ms) but no definitive posts....

Are you monitoring the track from pro tools? You need to mute that track.

Re: The "real" Latency of Apollo
I've experienced this as well, I have a guitar track, I duplicate this track and pan each hard left and hard right. As soon as you click on a UAD plug in you can hear a very clear chorus effect. This does not go away when you click on bypass, this only goes away when you remove the UAD plug in completely then the two track sound normal again. How do you mix with a delay on a track? HELP!

Re: The "real" Latency of Apollo
Really interesting as I am looking at buying a UAD Apollo Twin this month to replace my Omni
When recording a single vocal or guitar how much delay are you getting on average? Maybe I'll rent one before I buy |
