Bringing HDX into the fray obviously changes the outcome a little, but as far as native performance goes, the newer 7,1s are definitely a substantial step up. By the time you toss HDX2 and a dedicated video card into those old machines, firewire becomes the fastest means of transferring files... that is how old they are. It makes it frustrating, because they are still real workhorses.

I have definitely considered snapping up a 7,1 machine if prices drop a bit over the next 12 months. I'm not sure they will get as low as $2k in the immediate years. There fear-of-missing-out doesn't seem as rampant in professional circles as it does in the consumer arena. I would anticipate at least a good 3 or 4 years of use before 7,1 users start finding themselves in the predicament that Apple Silicon users face now with varying software support.
Yeah- a lot depends on what the new mac pros will be able to do. The investment in the current mac pros is steep. Many will not want to lose much of that. Maybe we'll see some start to pop up but I agree that they may go closer to 60-70% of the initial price. Who knows for sure but we'll find out soon enough.

All great comments. I didn't know this thread folder even existed until I searched on 7,1 mac pro today. Glad I found it!

What are you talking about, used/refurbished?

Or there are legit resellers selling the $6999 (from Apple) 12-core for $4999?

They've already fallen out of bed but it's hardly surprising.

Great machine but it looks like Arm is taking over the world now.

The avid stuff works great with both as well which is brilliant!

So happy with the 7.1 HDX3 fully loaded large ram and SSD’s. Still on Big Sur. Invested in 2019 not worried about new software updates for M1 until all developers are up to native. It’s expensive, but it works, well.
