importing reduces sound quality?

hey folks...i have a stereo aiff 16/441 that came back from the mastering engineer, but the fadeout is a little off and i need to fix it myself, so in order to impact the sound quality as little as possible, i created a 16/441 aiff session, imported the aiff file (all it has to do is split L+R), made the new fadeout, consolidated the region, and exported L+R back to stereo 16/441 aiff...but now the track sounds muddy, like its a lower resolution. which one of the things i did made the track muddy? i can't figure it out...

A direct copy of a digital file won't affect the sound quality. Is it the part you added that sounds muddy or the entire track?

Did you render the new file by "Bounce to Disk"?

There has been discussion on the forum before about the difference in sound quality by "bounce to disk" verses recording to an outside medium. There's a lot of speculation as to why, but what you're hearing may well be valid.

If you have another editor / program you can use, like Logic or a dedicated mastering program, you may have better luck.

i didn't use bounce to disk, i used the export function, shift apple K...

as for the other reply, its the whole track that sounds muddy now

this really makes me wonder about the fidelity of digital...i A-B the two versions and theres a pretty significant difference.

the only thing i can think of is that the original unedited master aiff came from a PC system and i'm using a mac....

There is no difference in a file that comes from a Mac or a PC. If it is an AIFF file, it is identical.

A digital copy will not change the sound.

Describe how you took the file into the computer. Also, compare the input track and your edited track, not the exported track. If you input the file again with no editing, how does it sound? Does it change on input or after editing or after exporting?
