how to spend this ca$h
I know it's only 500$ canadian... but that's what I have reserved for an all purpose mic (Guitar/Voice/ other accoustic instruments). Any advice?
Someone told me MArshall makes pretty decent mics for low cash. I also do have a Beringher B1 already... Thanks, bigD.

Re: how to spend this ca$h
Also, I only have the MBox, no outboard pre-amps... Should look at this as well or stick with the ones from the mbox?

Re: how to spend this ca$h
You mention the Marshall mics....I just ordered the MXL 990 which is a very good mic (not a Neumann, but also not a grand or more). I got mine for 60 bucks. That will leave you with plenty of cash for something else. The Focusrite pres on the Mbox are pretty decent, so you don't need to spend the cash for an outboard pre right now if you don't want to. Hope this helps.

Re: how to spend this ca$h
I dont have any mic suggestions as they all will vary with different vocalists, but ive been looking at getting a 57, I actually dont have one anymore. I had a 58 that I liked though. I currently use a KSM27 from shure. Its nice, a little whiny sounding, but it works good for close micing and my voice.
Also maybe invest in a popper stopper too. =-Ben

Re: how to spend this ca$h
A nylon on a hanger would do the trick wouldn't it?
So, is it true, to get the best sound, start with the best mic you can afford?

Re: how to spend this ca$h
depends really... All relative I think.
Essentially, I guess yes, but like you said, "Start". A $2000 mic wont sound any better than a cell phone microphone if its going through terrible cables and broken pres. But on the other side of things, somepeople like that sound, and a cell phone mic works for them.

Re: how to spend this ca$h
True, a $60 Marshall mic is not going to sound the same as a $2000 Neumann mic. However, that is not to say that a cheaply priced mic is not a very good mic (regardless of price). I do agree that for your best results, the very first piece of the recording chain is the microphone, so you do want a good mic to start with.
The Kid And yes, please, please make sure you have good cables, as what the Capt'n said is very relevant. |
