Default Pro Tools 11/12 Windows 8 RME Fireface UFX USB Unusable

My config:
  • Windows 8.1
  • Intel i7-6700k
  • 16 GB Ram (Profile 1)
  • Motherboard Gigabyte GA-Z170X-UD5 TH
  • nVidia GTX 1070
  • iLok 2 with lastest drivers
  • RME Fireface UFX USB with the lastest drivers

All BIOS & System optimizations done as described in the knowledge base article

All DVD/Optical drives uninstalled

Pro Tools is installed on a SSD

The software is extremely sluggish, slow to start, hangs up at every command... some examples:
  • when opening a project, it takes forever to open
  • using dialogs hangs up the app for 30 seconds
  • playing back a track with no plugins ( AND NO CLICK! ) results in a "Pro Tools has run out of CPU Power" even if the system usage is at 0%
  • when I try to run the "Hardware" dialog it says that the the hardware buffer is not set correctly, but the Fireface dialog says it's correctly at 2048.

Tried to disable all background software, the problem stays.

I don't know how to contact Avid support, and I cannot contact them via Phone (I'm in Italy)

(Cockos Reaper, on this very machine, with large sessions, runs flawlessy. Just tried it to figure out if it's an audio driver compatibility issue with the Operative System, which is not.)

EDIT: I also tried with Pro Tools 12.5, same problems.

Can anyone help?

Could you clarify :
PT, the software, is installed on the system drive C: (SSD) ?
PT sessions are on another drive (with specifications) ?

Hi joachim, thanks for the answer.

I tried both:

A session in the same Hard Drive where Pro Tools & Windows 8.1 are (the SSD),
and a session in an external usb 3.0 hard drive.

Same result.

Computer savvy users , who want to help (I can't) might like to know the specifications of the drive, like RPM and a possible "sleep" mode.

2048 is not supported except at high sample rates. Drop the RME buffer to:
64
128
256
512
1024

Hi guitardom, THANK YOU.

It's not stated anywhere, otherwise that's the first thing I'd try...

Problem solved. I owe you one, mate!

You might also want to look at this thread for additional optimizations you can do.
