what ive heard so far :
neumann km184 , km184i
akg 414 , akg 451 ( the 451 sound great )
gefell divison of neumann ... u can get em real cheap sometimes and they are the eastern german neumanns . great sound for the value .
neumann tlm 103 , u87 out of price range i guess .
best thing ive heard so far neumann and akg stereo mic ... wow but out of price range , too .

mayB that helps.

I would say go with either Audio Technica, CAD, or the Studio Projects brands for any low price options. I have usually found that in the world of low cost (under $500) condenser mics, the big boys like Neumann and AKG (who are amazing) simply put out lack luster stuff. Of course, you could buy used, but condenser mics are among the riskier used buys you can make because it is hard to assess the damage to their diaphragms, which is the heart and soul of them after all. My favorite condensers for a stereo pair listed in order from most expensive to least is:

1. Neumann U67's.
2. Neumann TLM103's.
3. AKG 414's
4. Neumann KM-184's (or 84's.
5. Two Shure SM57's crushed to death with limiting.
And, like one of the other posts mentioned, stereo for rooms is not usually neccessary. One mic run through limiting usually does the trick and doesnt muddy things up too much with phase issue's. Later, Dan

Have had to use a pair of AT4050s several times recently, worked great. Otherwise, you can't go wrong with any of the standards mentioned above.

Just to append my post, the expense of those mics isnt represented accurately, except maybe in the used price categorie. Its more like this:
1. U67
2. KM184
3. AKG 414
4. TLM103
5. SM57
Sorry

if u set the mics in a proper way AND you have the room i would definately go for 2 mics or a stereo mic .
running only 1 mic will do it ( depends on what you wanna do ) ... but having all instruments in the center is kinda waste of the other recordings .
imho the room and the overheads are the most important part on having a good drum sound .
the at 4050 isnt my taste at all . its to hifi sounding . i have one and its cool for distorted guitars , but it sounds unnatural on anything else . mayB i am to old fashioned

but thats just a matter of taste .

maybe ???

thanks all.
I remember I used a 414 in the past and liked it.
Is there a cheaper AKG version that comes close to the 414 ?
