I have been using 6.4/10.3.9 on my 400mhz G4/001 a bit. It works fine with lower track/plug counts. Just make sure you don't go to QuickTime 7. That seems to be the deal-breaker with Panther.

Panther is a much better OS than Jaguar, and actually runs better on older hardware.

Hey Phaseout,

I still say you should stay away from OSX on that machine. I have found from experience that the earlier G4's run much more smoothly and faster on OS 9 than on OSX. I would also not recommend a Processor Upgrade. You would be Much better off getting a New G5 or waiting for the New New Macs to come out.... a subsatntial increase in plug-in power and Safari works Great. There ain't nothin' like the smell of a New Mac Fresh outta the Box !

This is all true! However, a new machine is not really an option right now. She’s about to have a baby and the new computer budget was been absorbed by the new human budget. Plus any new computer would also mean a new interface. I’m going to have to find a way to make this work for another year or two.

Thanks to everyone! I really appreciate the input. I think I’m going to try to install OSX on her current audio drive and move her audio to the old system drive. See what I can get??

phaseout,

I've done all this stuff to my G4/001 rig, and learned the hard way what works best. I'm in Chicago. Email me and I can probably save you many hours (days/weeks?) of grief... [email protected]

I'm running a system with OS 10.3.9 and PTLE 6.9 on a G4 450 CUBE.

a completely unsupported computer... and with no problems.

No, it won't run as many plug-ins as an HD system... but you're not describing a NEED for that.
