Default 002 preamp quality

I know that this subject is touched upon in several places but I am a bit bewildered by all the strong opinion conveyed concerning the preamp quality of the 002...maybe it is a constant that you get what you pay for but I can still remember running a Rode mic into a small Bellari pre into a cassette portastudio and being blown away by the sound...those days are gone but I have had those moments with simple setups using the 002...I have also come away with some great sounding mixes using Mackie VLZ3 pres...which brings me to the question I wanted to ask those Ducsters who have a more sonically refined palate...would you use the VLZ3 OR 002 pres...until that day when you can afford something significantly more expensive to regain that blown away factor?

Not to sound trite but, use whichever sounds best to you. If it sounds right, it IS right. Remember that its not just the preamp. Its the combination of source-room-mic-cable-preamp-converter. Lots of places for the signal to change and some combinations will work better than others. Some mics are more affected by the room sound. Some mics will sound different depending on the input impedance. It really pays to experiment with all the choices you have available. When you do get the cash to buy some high-end stuff, it may also be a good investment to rent/borrow some of your choices so you can compare those as well. Also, sometimes you just want a little different flavor and some inexpensive tube pre (or that old Bellari) will do the trick.

EGS, I currently use an Apogee Rosetta 200 with my oo2R, but I have been thinking about getting the full Black Lion treatment and selling the Apogee. Any idea how the Black Lion package sounds compared to the Apogee 200?. This would simplify my set up and give me extra cash for some new plug-ins. I do really like the sound of the Apogee.

Thanks

You most likely will not miss the Rosetta. I didn't, and still don't, after owning a Rosetta 800. Get the Tweak Head package. Short of going HD, this is a no-brainer. Can you tell I'm convinced?
