PT 12 and Digi 003 "unable to communicate" error

Hi,
I am running PT 12.4 with the Digi 003 on a mid 2011 iMac OS X 10.8.5.

The Digi 003 works with PT 12 in terms of using it as an interface and transport. But, it often will display an error message that it can no longer communicate with the 003. I had the same issue when using PT 8 LE but it happened only once or twice in a 4 hour session. Now it happens 5 or 6 times in an hour and disrupts the session.

When the error message is on screen, the 003 is not longer an option in the "playback engine" pull down menu in "setup". After I reboot, the 003 is an option in the pull down menu but this can happen frequently, as I indicated.

I installed the drivers that came with the software download.
What suggestions do you have?

Try a new FireWire cable first.(they can fail for no good reason). Hopefully you didn't hot-patch that cable as doing this can(and usually will) fry the few circuit. The repair bill for that is often more than the unit is worth($325-500)

I wil try a new fire wire cable. I am also starting with opening the Avid 003 Family application before opening PT as a suggestion from another threat, although about a different hardware interface. I did not have to do that on PT 8 but it seems

Since I have upgraded to PT 12, got a new firewire cable and begin by opening the "avid 003 family" first, I no longer have multiple, interruptive can't communicate with the 003 errors.

Every once in a while I will have to re set up the 003 and re select it as the playback engine.
