Default Sonnet Echo I (not III) HDX compatibility

I'm looking at the Sonnet Echo I for a single HDX setup (Apple M2). I'd prefer it over the Avid HDX thunderbolt3 box due to it's wider footprint (more stable) and it seems to have larger/silent fans. Local price is about the same.

https://www.sonnettech.com/product/e.../overview.html

It is advertised as being HDX compatible, there is even a whole installation instruction for it, but it is absent on Avid's compatibility list:
https://avid.secure.force.com/pkb/ar...-Compatibility

So I'm wondering, is it officially compatible or not?

The Echo I does not have the pcie gen2/3 switch like the Echo III (aka hdx compatibility switch), nor does it have a built in TB2 converter like the 'HDX edition' boxes. But looking at the compatibility grid it seems only the 3-card boxes need to run at pcie gen 2. Though I can't tell what the single card Avid TB3 box is doing on the inside. I'm not sure the Avid box is based on the same tech as the Echo I, the Avid box was release 9 months before the Echo.

Any thoughts?

Hi,

Sonnet Echo I is not supported. Best to contact SonnetTech regarding this.

Thanks,

I don't own the unit and by the looks of it I won't buy it. But still, do you know by any chance why it's not supported? Is it not working due to a lack of older protocols, or is it simply not tested and thus not supported?

We'll go with the Avid branded box.
