Aux to parallel compression sample delay ???
HI !!
I just worried because i didnt know that adding a aux to make a parallel compression to drums can cause sample delay on aux track ! I think it may go out of phase in that way !? How i meassure wich plugins and how much smaple delay they have with parallel compression with an aux track ? Thanks !!! |

Re: Aux to parallel compression sample delay ???
You'd need to read the plug-in guide and see what the plug-in delay is. Add 10 samples of delay for bussing to another aux track.
Or you could print the track with the plug-in and put Pro Tools into samples view, zoom into the track and measure(highlight with the selector tool) the sample offset of a transit spike difference between the two tracks, one is the source audio other is the plug-in printed audio. This will be your plug-in delay. If I'm wrong someone please correct me. Thanks. |

Re: Aux to parallel compression sample delay ???
If you choose a plugin with no latency, you don't need to worry. I use BF76 all the time for this exact purpose and have no phasing issues. Other comps have latency that can be minor or drastic(any "look ahead" comp/limiter will have tons of latency). Experiment with your options and the ones that are bad will be obvious by the sound. Another method that can help is, set the drum outputs to a second stereo buss, insert the same plugin but set it so there is no gain reduction. Now both paths have the exact same latency so there will be no phasing or comb filtering. Then you need to decide if the latency affects the timing to a degree that you need to nudge the audio earlier in the timeline.

Re: Aux to parallel compression sample delay ???
Hi jeam25. Here is an easy way to parallel compress and get little or no delay.
Create 2 stereo aux channels put the same compressor plug-in on both, put bypass on 1 of the plug-in compressors. Now for example set all your drum tracks outputs to the unbypassed compressor channel. Then go back to your drum outputs and hold Alt+Ctrl+Shift (you can now send your drums out multiple outs) Send drums to bypassed compressor channel (will see + next to outs on drum tracks) blend the 2 aux channels to get your desired sound. P.S I think Alt+Ctrl+Shift is right on pc on Mac it's option+shift+Ctrl. |
