Problems with hardware insert
Yo People,
I have a strange problem making a hardware insert. I'll explain exactly. I want to make an hardware insert on (stereo) channel 1, insert goes "ADAT 7-8". The ADAT interface is an Apogee Rosetta 800. The hardware is Avalon vt747sp(compressor). So i patched the whole thing. ADAT 7-8 out to Avalon in, Avalon out to ADAT (7-8) in. The sound that i get sounds really distorted or broken...and softer but more shhh.... I also sent to ADAT 5-6 to lexicon mpx550 no problem. (coming back on aux (input ADAT 5-6)) When i use the lexicon on channel ADAT 7-8 as insert, No problem (but why ) When i patch Avalon to ANALOG 7-8 (for example) and make it an insert No problem...(but why ) (i want to use the rosetta to go in and out to the avalon (ofcourse). I think i don't understand what's going on... Why does the lexicon an tc electronic work as an insert and the Avalon and the aphex not... - I default all in/outs in PT. - Because it works the other way around, the cables should be fine. - i checked the settings on the apogee. - the input on digi 1/8 is -4db - the clock is on ADAT. PLEASE PLEASE SOMEBODY HEEEEELLLLLP!!!!! -Apogee rosetta 800 -Digi 002R -Avalon vt 747sp -Neutrik NYS-SPP-L1 -PT 7.1 cs 10 ANYBODY??? Thanx Tuur |

Re: Problems with hardware insert
It sounds like you already narrowed it down to the avalon, since you substituted the lexicon in the same position and it worked OK.
So the next thing would be to determine if it is happening on the input side of the avalon, or the output. My guess is that it is a gain staging thing.. So, come up with an alternate signal source (not from the rosetta) that you can plug into the avalon's inputs and see if you can duplicate the problem. Compare it to the lexicon and pay close attention to the levels... Don't change the level or your source.. This will test your "avalon out" to "rosetta in" connection. Next, come up with an alternate way to monitor the outputs of the avalon, like into a mixer that can feed your monitors. Same process.. Compare to the lex by feeding a signal to each via the rosetta. I'm guessing you will find the level is too loud or too soft somewhere in there.. Sorry, not an answer, but more troubleshooting steps to take..

Re: Problems with hardware insert
So People,
I did as "Flommer" suggested. output channel to digi 7-8 => Avalon =>, aux input set to ADAT 7-8. same problem No even output..(left seems softer than right ) also did output channel ADAT 7-8 =>Avalon=>, aux input set to digi 7-8. Same problemNo even output.. Also tried 5-6, other cables... But when i do insert to Avalon digi (7-8 for example). perfect result. Also when i put lexicon as insert on ADAT (7-8 for example), perfect result. PLEASE i don't get it. Should be a very nice chain or am i stupid?? I can't believe that i should mess with gain when i go from the rosetta to the avalon with the 002R. There is no mixer in between. HEEEEELLP thanx Tuur |

Re: Problems with hardware insert
How do you have everything clocked? You say "- the clock is on ADAT." - but WHICH clock? Pro Tools? If so - which device is it obtaining clock from? What is THAT device clocked to?
Can you give a more detailed description of all the connections as well as the clock settings on each device? You need to make sure all devices are sync'd to the same clock - I'm guess this is the problem. |

Re: Problems with hardware insert
Did you try 002R analog out to Avalon and then back to Rosetta?
Are your D-Sub cables on the Rosetta balanced? |

Re: Problems with hardware insert
Yes, tried that...
it seems to be the cables... cause the digi in and outputs (jack) ' eat' everything it worked the otherway around. So i thought that the cables were o.k.... Not.. I fixed it on the aphex and have to get the cables for the avalon. Hope it works now. Probably this guy gave me some cables that are not "pin 2= hot". i'll let you know Thanx Tuur |
