Processing time does vary with different formats, sometimes wildly so. Which format were you transcoding from and to?

And mattrixx, what in formats were your videos?

I was upscaling either to HD or 4K (don't remember). H.264

I launched Activity Monitor to see what was going on. The activity was entirely in the CPU cores. None of the 32 GPUs was touched, despite the fact that there's specific graphics encode/decode logic built into the GPUs. This port was clearly a quick-and-dirty port with no use of the Apple Metal framework (or even openGL, which is still there).

Although this is a graphics application, there are some pretty nice graphics in a lot of DAWs and plugins. Are they using the Metal framework? I think this underscores the fact that simply porting isn't enough (in the case of Handbrake it was even worse). M1 provides a lot of resources and a good port must take advantage of everything there.

Moving fully to this new world is going to take a while.
Interesting.

But it is a free app...

That doesn't seem like a tough ask for Handbrake. I wonder what happened there.

True, but a powerful, open-source tool used by video pros for (what seems like) decades. I'll test an upsampled H.264 here and see how it goes.

Agree but it's still a free app and like
Poster said it's a dirty port. Not really a good comparison

I replaced MPEG Streamclip with Shutter Encoder. Converts mp4 to DNxHD and can relay mixes to mp4 for client approval. Money well spent.

Shutter Encoder and ff-Works both use ffmpeg

So the usability/friendliness of the GUI and outside features may/will be different but the actual conversion engines should have the same performance for video conversion.
