Default PT11 and Canopus Video Peripheral

http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/e...eo-Peripherals

Here it says that the Canopus ADVC 100/110 "Will Not Work" with PT 11. I was thinking perhaps unsupported meant it will work but wont be supported, but it seems Avid felt it necessary to actually type out "Will not work"

So, does anyone have any solutions for replacing this? I'm finding most video peripherals are very much overkill. The Canopus boxes are so simple and all I need.

Is anyone else going to run into this? If so, any plans to share?

Thanks

I have the 110... pretty much used just for capture - and I typically use Adobe Premiere for that. How are you planning on using it? iMovie works well with it (capturing) as well.

I use a couple of Canopuses as well. FW out of the computer to the box then to the TV. Great for playing .dv files within PT.

If they're retiring this box what is a similar video convertor that's approved for playing video from within PT?

Just grab yourself a Blackmagic card or box and you'll never want to see a .dv file again.
Brilliant HD visuals! Work with ProRes files and an SSD for the video files... awesome!

You might be glad, but a handful who are using it will have their PT11HD $600 upgrade turn into a $800 upgrade. yes the quality is better than on the BM, but HD uncompressed DV throught the C100 works/looks just as nice on a HD LCD.

Just my 2 cents

when we had to use them, they were nothing but trouble
they would fall offline
people would try to use non DV codecs
.dv files are bigger than the same length 1080p photoJPEG

My company uses 4 Canopus boxes (as well as a few other brands) and they've been extremely useful. DV files are larger, but hard drive space is practically free these days so that's not an issue. DV files are certainly more stable (i.e. quicker to shuffle through) than when throwing common QT movies directly into ProTools. I'm not sure how other formats rate.

The only drawback we've discovered with the Canopus boxes is the firewire delay. PT allows compensation but we sometimes forget to reset that after deleting preferences. It would be nice to forgo that step, and the conversion to DV.

So which Blackmagic card/box is suggested? I've looked at the Intensity Pro and DeckLink but neither is readily available to purchase.

What's your secret for getting a Blackmagic?

They all seem to be in stock at B&H right now. Are you outside the U.S.?
