Default 002R / 18 tracks / live show- will it work?

Can anyone confirm that they've had good success using the 002r with all its inputs (all 18) being used for a live show recording? ON a laptop (let's assume the fastest PowerBook available).

We're about to make some purchases for a mobile thing like this, but I don't want to even try it if it's not going to work.

We're looking at an Octopre for the ADAT connection, a Rosetta for the SPDIF and then outboard pres for those inputs, etc. Since this will be a live show, it's gotta be pretty stable. We'll have the ability to redo songs, but I'd like for that to only be due to the band needing a better take than because of gear!!

So let's see a show of hands!

Not really, 16 simultaneous is the maximum. This is because there is no external digital word clock sync on any of the LE systems. So, an 002 must sync to one of it's digital inputs, and while doing that, it cannot use the other input.

In theory, you could try to record on two computers, each with 002's and octopres, synced together over Midi, then merge the sessions later. I've never tried it, but it might be worth researching. Good luck!

I'm pretty sure that there are some combinations which will work to get all 18 working and snch'ed correctly.

Hmmmm... looking at the specs of the 002R it seems you're right. This was not the case with the 001 (which I own), you could use all 18 inputs simultaneously. I believe one of your digitial input devices had to be set as slave for clocking purposes.

But in the 002R specs it says "8 channels of ADAT optical I/O or 2 channels of S/PDIF I/O" with the operative word being OR.

That kind of stinks. Messes up my whole plan!!

Well, anyone know if there's a chance this is not true? That the 002r can actually run 18 at once like the good old 001?

Hi,

Tele_Player is correct, you should be able to get all 18 inputs to work as long as you can clock at least on of your external devices to another source. If you set your self up so that RCA=S/Pdif and Optical=ADAT and default your I/O setup your should see 18 inputs. Pro Tools can only look at one of these inputs for its clock source so on or both of you other devices will have to be able to slave to external clock. I hope this answers your question.

Thanks,

yes it does!!! You rule my world today for that quick answer! Yeah, that's what I had assumed but the doc. I looked at confused me. I figured you just set one of the devices to be a slave.

Cool!
