Default firewire and OSX-invalid audio volume

just upgraded to OSX 10.2.3 on G3 Powerbook to do the Pro Tools LE 6.0 upgrade. All fine except when opening a session, the disk allocation dialog box won't let me choose my MobileIce firewire drive as a valid audio volume. Also tried opening a session from the startup disk, with no luck. Any ideas?

I get the same thing on my startup disk - I don't have a firewire drive to try. I guess I could try my iPod - I've used it occaisionally before when using OS9 & PT 5.1.

My Digi001 on my dual 500 is running just fine under 10.2.4.

PowerBook G4 667
512 RAM
48 Gig 5400 RPM drive
MBox
OS 10.2.4 (same results with 10.2.3)
PT 6 LE

That's weird, I get the same thing... not with PT5 to PT6, but with PT5.1.1 to PT5.2.1.
All sessions created on the Firewire drive with PT 5.2.1 won't open... Sessions created with PT5.1.1 work perfectly. I bought the drive and formatted it when I was still using 5.1.1.
Could that mean that the drive has to be prepared with the proper PT version present on the main drive??... Which would also mean that if you format the drive and later upgrade the PT version, you're screwed??!... Sounds like non-sense to me but at the same time...too many coincidences...

Hello,

Make sure your drives are designated as record volumes in Windows > Show Workspace. Click under the A column and set your record volumes to "R". If you can not set the volumes to Record or Playback check the following:

Drives should be formatted as HFS+ (Mac OS Extended)

Do not use UFS or Mac OS Standard (HFS) for Audio volumes.

If you are unsure what utility a Firewire drive is formatted with, back it up and reformat with Apple's Disk Utility.

Launch Apple's Disk Utility. Select your audio drives, go to First Aid and select "Repair Disk Permisions."

Hey Guys,
I've had this exact same problem as well - it started happening right after I started playing around with the Digi kext files through the Terminal (trying to fix the no sleep issue).

The first time it happened, I couldn't get any of my previous sessions to play - everything is installed on my 2nd internal hard drive (and this drive is ONLY used for Pro Tools) - I would always get this error when trying to open any of those previous sessions - finally did a complete erase and reinstall.

Recently this happened again (basically because I was screwing around again) and decided to try trashing all the Digi prefs, and it worked - so you might want to give this a try.

Go to your Home folder > Library > Preferences and trash the following (don't empty your trash just incase - once you've made sure that PT is up and running, then empty).

* com.digidesign.protools.plist
* the DAE Prefs folder (the entire folder)
* DigiSetup.OSX (wasn't too sure about this one, but trashed it anyway since I was trashing all Digi related prefs)
* Pro Tools LE v6.0 Preferences

Make sure and restart after trashing these prefs and test the issue. Not promising anything, but it definitely fixed the issue for me.

Well cali... I gave it a try and still no luck. Still get the same message. What baffles me is the fact that I can set the video settings but not the audio-- it really makes no sense and is quite frustrating.

When I first installed PT6 things seemed to work fine-- or, it recorded at least. Between this and the MIDI crap, I'm about to look for new options. Guess I'll try uninstalling and reinstalling PT *AGAIN*.

It's pretty rediculous when just to use a piece of software you have to constantly delete prefs or other files, change permissions or re-install the software over and over.

I'm not a tech, but I thought I saw a report of something similar to the original post on a user's system that I believe was finally fixed after trying everything else by upgrading their OS to 10.2.5.
10.2.6 was also just approved, and the compatibility documents will be updated shortly. See if updating your OS to either 10.2.5 or 10.2.6 makes any difference. (be sure and repair disk permissions after updating)

Looks like I've FINALLY got everything to work... today is a good day. I did an uninstall of PT and then reistalled everything and it seems to have done the trick (for now).
