Default Current HDD Suggestion

Hi all,

What are the current recommended SATA drives to go in a G5 Pro Tools rig as system drive?

Hi,

Thanks for that.

At my local supplier I see WD Caviar Black, Blue and Green. Is there a significant difference?

yes:
Black: hi-pro 7200 RPM
Blue: average utility drive
Green: power save tech, not good for A/V production work (may be OK for end user streaming content but not for creation)

then there is the Raptor drives 10,000 RPM, smaller than the Black drives and more costly.
they can perform better but is it worth it to you? only if you have a lot of extra cash (and if you do send me some)

+1 for the WD Caviar Black. I have two of them and they are fantastic.

A system drive? or an audio drive?

The original poster said System Drive right there in his original post.

Hey, guys I need some help ASAP if possible.

I got some of the caviar blacks and they don't work.

I am on old G5s.

I need to get a PT install working tonight for a session tomorrow!

Same problem on two G5s.

Take out all the old drives. Put a new WD Caviar Black 1TB in each G5.

Boot both with Leopard DVD.

Both don't list any drives in Disk Utility!

Are these drives too new for old G5s? Is it something about SATA2?

I can't order different drives now for tomorrow morning!

OK, is it something about jumpers?

Printed on the drive is:

Jumpered pins 3-4 enables PUIS,
pins 5-6 limits PHY to 3Gbps

The drives didn't ship with any jumpers in the packet

Hmm...I didn't have any issues with the WD Black's. I installed it in the second bay, formatted it and installed Leopard on it. I've done it twice on the G5, and twice on the Mac Pro.
