Default What's up with Playlist view

This is weird, and frustrating ;

Comping together drum takes, that were tracked to a click, after most of the other instruments were recorded - so playlists were used for the various takes...

All drum tracks are named with the take number, and all playlist numbers correlate between takes.

For example, all tracks for take 10 are on playlist (21), all tracks for take 11 are on playlist (22), etc.

So... in playlist view, soloing a particular take, solos all other tracks for that take, within the group...

except for some inexplicable reason, one of the Tom tracks will solo a completely different take, or wont solo at all - depending on which of the other takes I solo.

I've verified that all the take, across all the tracks, have the correct playlist numbers - so what's going on?

It gets weirder still :

I'm starting to think that when you use the "promote" button, to copy material from one playlist, up to the active playlist; rather than copying and pasting based on either playlist numbers, or the fact that Pro Tools knows which playlist is active - as one might presume - it seems Pro Tools has some crazy way of executing it, by moving the selection up based on how many lanes are visible above the source playlist in the GUI.

What!!!????

So, thanks to this errant Tom track, depending on which playlist I'm promoting material from, I might find I've got some Floor Tom on the Rack Tom playlist, the Left Overhead in the Floor Tom track, some Room Mic I forget where.

I've had to resort to auditioning the takes with the Drum Group active, then disable it, and go through track by track, promoting the correct playlist - which is a real pain in the backside.

It really shouldn't be this way!

That's really weird - are all the playlists in the same order? Have you tried deleting/recreating the group? Might also try trashing preferences.

Strange indeed.

Yes, all the playlists are in the same order in playlist view.

I did double check that the groups were set up correctly, but it didn't occur to me to delete them, and recreate them.

I've finished that session, but will bear that in mind if it crops up again.

I think I discovered another serious problem, with PT breaking another important feature, but I need to verify it in that session, and in a new session - so a trashing of prefs is probably overdue.

Cheers!

do you think this same thing would happen if: you make your PLaylists .01 from the beginning ???

They are exactly that.

"Kick in_take.01"

"Kick in_take.02"

Etc.

I would usually track Drums first, so for example ;

"Kick in_take.01" would be on PT playlist (01), "Kick in_take.02" would be on PT playlist (02) etc.

But on this particular session, live drums were added a week or two after everything else was done, by which time PT playlists had grown to about (10) or so.

That shouldn't be an issue though, as all tracks for take 01 are on the same PT playlist, all tracks for take 02 are on the next PT playlist - so everything is sync from that point of view, and in every other respect, the errant Tom track aside, the Group is functioning properly.

Hey again, Carl. I just replied to your comment in another thread, but decided to look at your posts to see if it helped answer my question (haven't found out yet).

But you're the only other forum poster I've seen that had the exact same problem I had with these playlists (this thread). Coincidentally, it was also for drum tracks for me last year on a recent PT version (still years after it was happening to you), which lasted for several months despite reinstalling. I don't remember what made the problem go away - it may've been when I got a new laptop, but I am GLAD to see it go.

I'm just commenting here to send sympathy ex post facto!

Trashing Prefs is step #1 for "odd behavior"
