Default Strange Behaviour between Pro Tools & Mbox 2

Hi there,

This is my first post to this forum. The issue I'm having has been around for a couple of years it surpasses any Pro Tools or OS X operating systems I have upgraded to over the years.

The problem is inconsistent and seems to appear randomly.

The first part of the problem I believe is quite common. Pro Tool throws up CPU overload error messages when there appears to be plenty of CPU and RAM available. -9173 is the code I've been getting in Pro Tools 11.3. This is a problem that occurs when recording and mixing.

The second problem is strange. Whilst recording a single mono source such as a microphone I randomly get hissy and distortion it starts quiet before getting louder and spiking all over the place. It also sounds like the source is being recorded in 8 bit. I could also describe it as sounding like radio interference. I seem to be able to resolve the problem my pulling out the XLR cable from my Mbox 2 and re-plugging it.

Another issue that I'm not sure is related but I suspect it is, is that the waveform overview drops in resolution sometimes like it is under sampling the audio. However I can't hear any change in the audio quality. I've attached an image highlighting the issue.

I'm operating under all the usual recommendations from Avid such as hard drive sleep settings and energy saving.

Any advise anybody could offer would be really appreciated.

Listen to this sound file you can hear an audio drop out about half way through it then fades back in. This is a raw recording there is no editing or effects.

I wonder if the 48v supply to the microphone dropped off for a moment. Would this be the interface itself?
