Default Give me ideas on how to insert outboard gear!! 003Rack

Alright let me get some ideas,
I got a 003 rack also PreSonus 96 optical in to the 003 rack. I got a few out board gear units such as compressors and multi effects units. I know that in protools i can set up inserts (virtual patchbay) BUT there are no insert "in/outs" on the back of the unit (003) NOW will the outputs work as inserts with a TRS (i mean come out of the output to an outboard device and back in to thesame output with a TRS?????) Please give me some ideas on how you guys are patching in your outboard gear.

No, the inputs and outputs on your 003 are not like the inserts that you might have on a mixer. I don't know the specs on the 003, but if the ins and outs are TRS it is because they are balanced, not because they work like mixer inserts.

If you want to use outboard gear, you will need to use those precious ins and outs in a very literal way... use outputs 5-6 as a stereo send and inputs 5-6 as a stereo return for example.. If you use matching pairs like this then you can use the inserts on protools tracks for external hardware just like a software plugin.. In Setup->IO you can rename your inserts based on which box you have plugged in (DBX comp, for example) so that when you set up your insert on a given track you dont have to remember which physical ins and outs are being used..
