Default Bounce Handler Cannot Keep Up

I know it's because I'm pushing the system (5.1.1 on 300 MHz G3 B&W using OS 9.2 with 384 MB of built in RAM and a Lacie Firewire Drive) when I'm using a number of plugins. Would more RAM help fix the problem? Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

RAM is not really going to help with this issue, although you are a little on the low side - have you tried allocating more RAM to PT? Your main problem is that you're maxing out your CPU, and the only thing that can fix that is a faster computer. If you haven't tried it already, make sure that 'convert after bounce' is selected when you do your bounce, that will take a little load off of the CPU and might let you make it through the whole song. If you don't have the option to upgrade your computer, then you need to start processing your files/tracks using audiosuite plug-ins instead of RTAS, which will allow you to disable some plug-ins before you do your bounce.

If ugrading CPU is not an option, try this:

•Close all plugin windows
•Close mixer window
•Bounce to disk at multi-mono, same sample rate as session, with import after bounce selected
•Select newly bounced files from audio bin
•Export selected as file, stereo interleaved, 16 bit, 44.1

You might be able to make it happen. This is the only way my LE can bounce if I have full track count and plugins maxed.

de-fragment your hard drive. sometimes protools tells bounce handler cannot keep up when the real reason is that hard drive works too inefficiently. it might or might not solve your problem, but worth a try.

Hi. I know this post is related with an OS9 system, but I'm curious about the defrag issue. Can you defrag a hard drive in OSX? I've read the best thing is to back up everything and re-initialize the drive, but I'd like to know more about the defrag options in OSX.

you cannot defrag the osx system drive (boot drive actually), but only other (non-boot) drives. when you want to defrag your osx system drive, you must boot from some other drive (or cd).

* norton systemworks is generally A Bad Thing (tm) for osx, but it has a good defragment utility (speed disk), which correctly used does magic. just never install norton, always run it from cd.

* diskwarrior is also a good disk utility, it can rebuild directories but doesn't do actual defragmenting. it's a different kind of optimization, and mostly a safety feature, and nice app to have available in case a disaster strikes.

* techtool4 / drive10 by micromat are nice apps too, but i haven't owned neither so cannot comment. techtool should be better from what i've heard.

but yes, it's true that you can "defragment" by initializing the drive. you however need to have plenty of backup space if you want to do that
