Default Re: What would you replace an old MacPro with these days?

hi, answer me this ... you have a MacPro with 3 PCIe slots on the Motherboard / with MacMini, how can you get the same power from TB on the motherboard ... and using an external TB chassis for PCIe cards ... if this is true, then the MacMini truly is the little brother of the NEW MacPro ...

cheers

john

Or as I stated early on in this thread... just wait for the new Mac Pro:

No it's not! Add an interface add an external drive add a keyboard with a numeric keypad.
Then with all that stuff you have plugged in and DAW software running your battery is going to die fast.
No hard drive bays - one or 2 USB ports instead of 5.
Crippled CPU power.
Are you really going to want to edit audio for 8 hours on a trackpad?
If you are then you going to be hospital getting hand surgery.

oops now I need to bring a bag of cables and pack up my Barefoot's

Buy a New Mac Pro as Ej suggests.
You buy a machine when you NEED it.
There is always/always going to be something better coming down the road in computer land.
I was posting options... and simply was stating that a laptop is an option If you need a portable recording system and want something new now as apposed to waiting for the new Mac Pro (I posted a link to the post just before this one) (plus with the i7 chipset has more power than an older Mac Pro anyway, so it is a viable option). The current generation of Mac Pro's are not all that to brag about so I suggested waiting for the next release.

The option to go with a Mac Mini is there but would involve getting a screen, and externals aswell... so the price jumps up considerably just do to that (although I assume you could go with a cheap monitor and a Thunderbolt to HDMI or other adapter to get into it for very inexpensive)

The hackintosh is a viable means for those who know what they are doing and have the time and temperament to get it all together and up and working... I for one love the "In Warranty" support you get just buying a product from a company, not to mention extended coverage once that warranty goes out...

Yup

Another pro not mentioned yet is the compact form factor of the Mini. I welcome the extra desk space.

Plus much larger resale market for the mini.

Yes especially if they are going to be using flash memory storage instead of disk memory (SSD or ATA) as IBM probably still owns that patent (they usually sell their stuff off to other companies... like Plasma technology, boy did they screw up selling that! )

I upgraded from a Mac Pro 2007 to a Mac mini quad the other day. I put my 3 hard drives in 3 USB 3.0 housing and all is good. I did have to purchase a cd drive but other than that I'm very pleased with the performance. What I will do in the future is go to sd drives.
