Default OT - Studio Headphones

I currently use Sony MDR-7509 headphones, and I'm happy with them. I have to buy 2 more sets of headphones and wanted to reach out to the ducsters to see what professional headphones you guys use in the studio.

peace,
Rob

Closed, open or semi open?
What will be their main function?
How important is sound isolation?

Not the best but ... I use 3 Sony MDR-V600's and 3 Direct Sound Extreme Isolation Headphones. I wouldn't say that the Sonys are the best, and neither are the DSs, but the DSs are amazing for tracking multiple artists in the same room. They are like wearing ear protectors with little speakers in them. It does give "extreme isolation."

Thanks - good information.

I'll have the ability to have two people in the vocal booth, and two people in the live room at the sametime.

Sound isolation will be important - I'm using Vic Ferth for the drums. I need headphones that will be good for vocals. And if the vocalist will be working with a guitarist it may be helpful to switch to headphones with better isolation.

Thanks,
Rob

I have a few pairs of Sennhieser hd280's. They are well insulated, sound pretty good and don't cost much.

I really like the Beyer DT770 pro's for closed and the 990's for semi open.
The Sennheisers are great too.
For really good isolation, check out (as mentioned above) Direct Sound Extreme Isolation here .
Also there's some amazing cheapies that Harvey Gerst sells called MoreMe. They are only like $20-$30 so it's worth grabing a set to try. You'll find more info here .
Harvey is a legend in the recording industry and knows his stuff.

Good luck

One of my clients bought a pair of these so that click bleed wouldn't get picked up by his mics when he's doing demos at home on his 001. They are a very good investment for someone who needs great isolation from a pair of tracking cans. Not the greatest sounding cans in the world, but they're not too bad - certainly good enough to track with. I plan on getting a set myself.

I personally really like the HD280's as well. The 32dB sound isolation is awesome. I use them at work to block out noise and at home when recording as well. I'd buy 3 more pairs if I had that many ears

Exacly. I can attest that they do what they are advertised to do. Put them on and get that <in my best announcer voice> "EXTREEEME ISOLATION" (lation ... lation ... lation)

Actually I quite like mine -- and have never had a complaint from clients using them.
