The E-mu Virtuoso is awesome. $999.00. Look into it, you won't be disappointed. I wasn't.

The Drum Doctor CDs have some very nice snares and they are louder than any body elses. There are some very cool hits on the Burning Grooves CD as well. I take the time to rummage through the sample CD pulling the hitz I like and creating my own collection. All the drum collections (and I've seen most of them) have about 10% stuff I would use and searching through the chaff can wear you out.

As a drummer, pro tools fanatic and studio owner I find it amazing that people are
throwing away original performances and replacing them with lame samples...
Gee, three velocity settings!!! its a joke.
Get a really good drummer with really good drums with kik ass micing ... no comparison

I agree about the great drummer, kit, mic etc. thing...but not everyone has this luxury all the time and we all have dealt with some mingin' kits and random limbed players that no amount of tweakage other than replacement can rescue. Don't forget that SR can be used as a creative tool as well as a fixit !

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'll take Bob Clearmountains drum samples any day over real drums in my studio. You see, I've got 2 SM81's 1 U87 and 1 SM57, not to mention my studio is in a converted bedroom in an apartment complex. There's no way I'll be able to get great drum tones with the limited amount of mics, and the small room (which couldn't fit a drum set anyway)that I have. I'm sure there's plenty of people that's in the same situation. Now if I could only get my damn Unitor 8 to communicate with Pro Tools, I'll be able to start laying down drum tracks.

I don't disagree with Bjorn.....BUT....

Sometimes when mixing, you hear the kit come together with the bass and guitars and you decide.....

Hey, that snare/kick sounds nice....BUT....with the bass and other instruments a 'different' kick sound would be better suited...or a higher pitch snare suits the song better, etc...

just an idea

It is not 3 velocity settings...it is 3 velocity zones...each with their own sample. It crossafades between them, and lets you adjust how the samples should react to the velocity the drummer is playing. It is a ratio wich at 1.0 follows the original source in level...then you can exaggerate the dynamics, or smooth them...whatever suits.

I am pretty certain that you haven't tried it yet....no drummers have complained...on the contrary. Of course it has to be used with skills like everything else, and will sound best used with a great recording.

I love to use it creatively too, and trigger other sounds from the drum performance.
