Cubase Pro 8 costs $550.

Depending on what PT version you're using it may or not make sense.

I used Nuendo for a long time then switched to PTHD Native. I'm very happy with my setup.

Hopefully the people here that are very unhappy will switch over.

Not sure if they stopped it for a while, but Steinberg crossgrades are nothing new. I actually use both PT12 and Cubase 8 and find that both have their pluses and minuses. For me, Cubase just isn't as stable as it used to be. PT is very stable on my system, yet others have nothing but problems.... go figure. Cubase has lots of stock plugins, but I find most lacking compared to third party plugs, and don't really use the stock ones. Cubase does have some nice composer features though; chord pads being one I use a lot. If it seems a good fit, there is nothing with C8.

I tried to order EDU version ($179.99) from Sweetwater - they said "Our rep spoke to Cubase and the crossgrade isn't quite ready yet. They have been using it in Europe and should be rolling it out in the US soon."

Steinberg, Magix, et all have been offering crossgrades from all DAWs, not just Pro Tools, for decades. Nothing new. Steinberg also does crossgrades from Logic, Sonar, etc. And the others do the same. It's a common practice.

From Jul 3, 2002:

I wonder if Digidesign is going to try as aggressively to gain PC market share.

Sure is.

Generally by the companies that are looking to grow their user base at the expense of their margins.

Or by companies that are "chasing" the market leader.

IOW, when you see Avid offering crossgrades from Cubase etc, you might be witnessing something "new".
