bass management issues related to studio monitors
I am mixing an album right now on a pair of KRK V6 studio monitors. The low end sounds fine when listening to the monitors, but as soon as I burn a CD of what I've been mixing and listen to it on my stereo, or any other CD player, the bass sounds way too boomy. The KRK V6's only go down to about 60 hz. Other than getting a new pair of studio monitors, how do I accurately get an idea of what is going on in the low end. I've tried mixing some to my Sony MDR-V900 Headphones, but to no avail.
Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks, Nathaniel

Re: bass management issues related to studio monitors
You might have room problems....I used to fight my mixes the same way. I moved into a different room in my apt, added some bass traps, and then got a sub. I don't play the bass guessing game anymore. Also having a sub really impresses the clients if you're looking for that. I use event 20/20's with a tannoy sub which was about 400 bucks. It's pretty beefy and has plenty of that good stuff, just make sure if you go that route you tune your sub over a few days before you start mixing.

Re: bass management issues related to studio monitors
Use the singal generator plugin and sweep manually thru the frequences to get an idea of where your resonances lie. You will have dips and peaks at different freqs. Try different placements. Move the monitors away from the wall, sit closer to them, move around the room listening to the problem freqs.
I use monitor placement, furniture in the room, and a couple of those movable "office walls" to break up standing waves and I get closer to what I want, but I dont fool myself to believe that I will ever get a flat freq response.

Re: bass management issues related to studio monitors
If you can't afford room treatment (although it's relatively cheap) or it's just not practical, you can put a 2 channel notch filter EQ between your main outs and your monitors, and then use a signal generator and frequency spectrum analyzer to flatten them out (thereby compensating for your rooms acoustical problems with EQ cutting or boosting).
The best fix is to acoustically treat your room, but this technique can help quite a bit. Good luck!
