Default 002 r design ?

Just got my 002 r and put it in my rack ... Well, I really wonder: although the functioning of a device is the most important aspect, still, the outer look and design aesthetics has also some real value. What could be the idea and intention behind 002 r looking so hopelessly sterile, boring, without any interesting creative idea as for the outer appereance ? The funeral looking large grey desk with few grey buttons (the spots on them remind me the army style coat). 001 was blue, had at least some creativity on it. It is so easy to make an average appealing design, with few colours, original shapes, some lights etc = an image. It is no pleasure to occassionally look at the 002 in my rack. Among its stylish neighbours (Millennia, Lexicon, DACS etc.) it looks like a huge plastic grey poor mouse ...

I can't exactly say this holds true for the 002, but some of the greatest sounding pieces of kit around are nothing to look at. Check out just about any mic pre worth its weight and then take a gander at the low-end junk...which one's glitzier? Almost always the junk. Which would I rather have in my rack? The ugly ducklings.

The good designers put the money where the sound is.

I agree. I got a 002R to do some location recording. Compared to my HD interfaces, the 002R looks like an outdated design.

I still have the blue Digi 001. I don't like to look over and see blue (matching NOTHING). I think the Digi 002R looks MUCH better. However, I agree with the idea that it's the sound that counts.

Enjoy!

the knobs are too big... would be nice to have more "whats going on inside" info on the front.

LE hardware should always look cheaper than HD hardware, that's one aspect of product line diversification. when i can buy a HD system some day, i'd definetely want it to look better in addition to the real improvements...

and, imho, 002r looks good. less is more. it's the same design principle why the powerbooks look more professional than dell laptops

I hate the look of the 001, and agre the 002 is a vast improvement. I like gear that doesn't stick out, yet blends in with the environment.

However, the phantom power switches on the back are a really really stupid idea.

i agree. my unit sits in the rack most of the time and the switches just remain unused because of the placement. luckily my digimax has phantom switches in the front panel where they belong

It´s all the same, mostly: true virtue comes in a humble disguise, while the the preteners glitter, glisten and sparkle (again, most of the times)
