Bounce To Quicktime Only Outputs Audio
The problem seems to be the same on either my TDM (G5 2.3 dp/10.4) and LE (g4 1.25 mdd/10.4.2). Nine out of ten times it won't work. It's when it works I start scratching my head.
That said, it seemed to work better on pt6.4, rarely giving us a problem. I never checked what the codec was on our quicktimes. But now with 6.9cs2/10.4 we were sent an Avid Meridien compressed QT where we got no visuals from TDM and an occasional successful BTQTM on LE. We mistakenly came to the conclusion that Avid Meridien was the problem codec. Then why would Sorenson 3 also give us problems? Repaired permissions on the LE (to no avail). The TDM system is rock solid in every other respect. Do I dare touch it (go 10.4 to 10.4.2) to do a bounce (which we really do need)? This screams OE (operator error); frame rate mismatch etc. But once I get a succesful bounce, the very next one goes south. I'm not doing a sample rate conversion and I've tried all the session frame rate options, just incase the movie was mistakenly output at something other than what the show are telling me. All suggestions or solutions would be greatly appreciated. Re: Bounce To Quicktime Only Outputs Audio
I had this same problem today on my system
2.3 G5 HD3 OS 10.4.2 I believe that what finally made it work a couple of times in a row was naming the Movie something like "test" and bouncing it to the desktop. Then I remamed in the file manually. Definitely a wierd one. -Mike |

Re: Bounce To Quicktime Only Outputs Audio
Thanks Mike. Tried your suggestion and crossed my fingers that Bounce to QT would favour the desktop, or anywhere else for that matter. But no such luck. The first output worked but then none after that. However I did notice a pattern developing. Everytime I would restart, the first bounce would work, then nothing after that. Seems to work consistently that way. So at least I can definitely get a BTQTM when I really need it - as long as I restart.
The installed version of Quicktime, Version 7.0.1, is the latest version. I only have one "account" on this computer so I don't believe this is a permissions problem. Kevin

Re: Bounce To Quicktime Only Outputs Audio
Willard - You could certainly try updating to OS 10.4.2, which may help.
Otherwise, have you tried trashing prefs and database files? If not, that may be the easier way to go, to see if that fixes the problem. |

Re: Bounce To Quicktime Only Outputs Audio
Thanks DigiTechSupt
Deleting the prefs and dbases as per the General Troubleshooting Doc, is not a routine I've gotten into with OS X. But I duly tried it, as suggested, along with repairing the disk permissions. Still didn't fix the problem. As for updating the OS, as the machine is running great other than the QT Bounce problem, I'll make a new clone of the drive tonight and then upgrade the cloned drive from 10.4 to 10.4.2, to see if that fixes the problem. I'll report back what I find. Kevin

Re: Bounce To Quicktime Only Outputs Audio
I just had this problem. I checked codecs, etc., not selecting more than the movie, don't try to change sample rate . . .
It would still bounce a sound only file . . . no Video track in the movie. SOLUTION: I put PTs in GRID Mode so that exact frames where selected for the region boundaries and the bounce worked. This is repeatable with this movie (an MPEG-4/48k). If I define the region in SLIP mode it will be audio only, in GRID mode it will contain video. Hope this works for you as well. 9.6.2cs2 / 10.4.2 |

Re: Bounce To Quicktime Only Outputs Audio
We constantly work in Grid Mode, occasionally swapping to Slip Mode and then back to Grid. So all of our movies have definitely been output in our "default", Grid Mode.
That said, I'm going to try the reverse and output in Slip and see what I get... Thanks Kevin

Re: Bounce To Quicktime Only Outputs Audio
you mentioned getting Avid Meridien codec quicktimes but without the visuals, and that you are using QT 7 - that may be one of your problems....the Avid codec is not yet compatible with QT7, so you will be unable to see the image until Avid rewrite the codec and you install that into your QT plug-ins folder.

Re: Bounce To Quicktime Only Outputs Audio
So on the TDM system I cloned the drive (using SuperDuper, as Carbon Copy Cloner was freezing on authentication in 10.4, a known issue) and then upgraded the cloned drive to OS 10.4.2.
Seems like some progress was made as we were finally able to generate a QT that was originally generated with the Avid Meridien Codec. That said, first movie would work, but then not subsequent bounces. Again tried bouncing elsewhere, in this case to the boot drive, which worked the first time, but nor for subsequent bounces. Then we hit on the idea of creating a new folder for each bounce. Worked every time! So to recap, if we want to BTQTM, we have to either choose a "virgin" folder, or make a new folder each time, to guarantee a bounce, regardless of which drive we bounce to. On the other hand, the LE system, after deleting prefs, databases, reparing permission etc continues not to export multiple QTs unless you quit and reload PT. As for the Avid codec and QT 7, I can open a quicktime movie generated with Avid Meridien and see it as per usual with the following codecs I got from the Avid site, placed in the Quicktime library. hd/library/Quicktime/ AvidAVDJCodec.component (v9.4.2) and AvidAVUICodec.component (v9.4.2) I did re output the Avid Meridien QT from QT pro and bounced to Sorensen 3. That's the version I'm now using in my PT session. Thanks for the input. Kevin

Re: Bounce To Quicktime Only Outputs Audio
It since turns out that the TDM system no longer bounces QT movies when a fresh folder is selected, which I thought was my fix. I don't know why the system is exhibiting this recidivous (habitual lapse into criminal) behaviour, but I thought the post might help those similarly frustrated.
Strange that it happens on both a TDM and an LE system. As there doesn't seem to be huge traffic on this thread, that would indicate not many people are having this problem. Therefore a wipe and a clean install is my only option? Yeuch!
