As I stated earlier, the issue is the mixer or other device is getting its ground from the laptop, which causes noise. When you unplug the laptop you "lift" the ground. Without a ground on the laptop, the mixer/mbox has no path to find one which is why the signal is clean.

I had a similar issue & asked a friend who is an electrician by trade - he said lift the ground but always use it with a Residual Current Device. This is a hefty 4 outlet power box with a safety switch which will cut all power the split second it senses a power irregularity.
