Have to force quit Pro Tools
For a few weeks I have had to force quit pro tools at the end of the day. Ill close the last session (which goes fine) and when I quit pro tools it just never closes. Eventually I right click the icon and have to force quit. This doesn't seem to happen if I just open a session and mess around for a few minutes and then close and quit. Only after working on multiple sessions.
I am on a Trashcan Mac Pro quad core was on 10.15.7 and PT 22.10 A few days ago I did a format and clean reinstalled everything from the ground up. Now on 12.6.5 and PT 23.3. Experiencing the same behavior. Has anyone one else seen this? Is there anything i can look for in Console that would help me zone in on what might be hanging? |

Re: Have to force quit Pro Tools
I've seen this on and off as long as I can remember, at least since PT10. And I've seen others report it from time to time, but never saw a explanation or fix. I still se it on 2023.3. I was on v 2020.12 for a long time, and I don't think I saw it there.
Anyway, I've never seen any reports of this causing other problems, it's annoying but relatively unproblematic. I don't quit PT very often anyway, or shut down my mac.

Re: Have to force quit Pro Tools
Could be a plugin causing PT to hang on exit. The hard part is figuring out which one, if that's even the issue.

Re: Have to force quit Pro Tools
It's interesting that you're seeing this on a Trashcan Mac as this has been confirmed on mostly Silicon Mac's as a bug.

Re: Have to force quit Pro Tools
I don't know where that's confirmed, but the 'crash-on-quit' has been around since way before AS macs. I know I had it on my 2008 mac pro, if not on my G4 PPC!

It's been logged with Avid as a bug.

Re: Have to force quit Pro Tools
Its something Ive have experienced in the past from time to time, but nothing like this. Its every single time at the end of a full work day.
What is interesting to me is that I ran High Sierra and 2022.10 up until a month or so ago and this wasn't an issue. I cloned my drive before the format/reinstall. Maybe Ill look at my old plugins folder and see if I installed something that I forgot about. |

Re: Have to force quit Pro Tools
My old system I keep on 9HD never crashes on closing. However, since I moved to the latest Pro Tools on an M1 Mac, it is a daily occurrence.

Re: Have to force quit Pro Tools
I have a theory that this happens to me when I have been working on multiple sessions in a day at different sampling rates.
When I have been working on just one project on any given day, even multiple sessions but all at the same sample rate, then I'm pretty sure it all shuts down correctly. But if I have to switch between different projects at different sample rates and I hear the interfaces "click-click-click" to reset their clocks, then I'm pretty sure that I will have to force quit at the end of the day. I have yet to fully test this theory, though ...

Today, Pro Tools closed fine, but once I powered down my hardware it locked up my computer forcing a restart.
