Default dbx compressor help to use mbox inserst

I have the mbox, and would like to use a dbx 166xl on vocals-would someone please tell me how to configure it in my I/O set up? the manual says nothing. I have the trs balanced to two unbalanced 1/4 inch jacks. It says when i choose it, the outputs are already in use? hmm Should I go from the mic to comp to mbox and leave the insert stuff alone? Thank you.

IIRC, you shouldn't need to assign the hardware insert. The i/o selection in the insert column gives you the possibility of assigning physical outputs as inserts, the error message you're seeing is caused because you've already got Analog outs 1-2 assigned to the track outputs...disable these (set them to no output) and you'll find that you can now assign outputs 1-2 in the inserts column.

For what you're trying to do (I'm assuming you're trying to comp the signal pre-MBox), I think all you simply need to do is plug your insert (y) cables into the MBox's Insert jacks and the corresponding I/O on the 166. The signal path in the MBox should now go from your mic, into the MBox, and to the comp before the signal comes back to the MBox and prints on your track.

I could be wrong, but it's my understanding of how the physical inserts on the back of the MBox operate...give it a shot....

Yes, the inserts on MBox is hardware and diverts the pre-amp signal with the cables you have.
This means that the incoming signal is processed through your 166 before it enters PTLE.
You cannot assign inserts to an audio track like you can with the OO1 or OO2.
The only real choice you have once your in PTLE with MBox is SPDIF Digital or Analog I/O
