I thought this was easy...
Hmmm... Here i am, a recent MAC convert, NOT that i have anything against PC's, but i had a huge problem with mine etc etc etc...
I have a G4 powerpc 400mhz running protools 5.2.1cs on mac os 9.2 now, this machine has previously (and concurrently) had mac osX on it, which i dont use, at all. When i double click a protools session (saved in 5.2.1 under 9.2) it tries to open it with protools 6.01 , which is of course a osX app...dang'ed if i can figure this out ... (PC, rightclick > openwith > always use this app) I thought this was easy.... cheers

Re: I thought this was easy...
If I'm understanding you correctly, you have two versions of ProTools installed on your mac, a 5 for OS9 and a 6 for OSX. Can't you just trash the ProTools 6 application?
BTW, the Mac version of "Always use this app" can be found by using Get Info on a file (Command-I). Hope that helps! |

Re: I thought this was easy...
You can't hide the fact that you are a recent switcher: PC people always seem to spell Mac as "MAC."

Re: I thought this was easy...
i'm sure you have your reasons for staying with 5.2 and 9.2
but dear osX, 10.3.? is computing, like you have reached heaven after leading a good life! |

Re: I thought this was easy...
Here, here! Make the switch. Even your Mac wants you to make the jump to OS X. The water's fine. Come on in!

Re: I thought this was easy...
Hi,
simple workaround: Launch PT5, then open your sessions from within PT(File>Open Session)

Re: I thought this was easy...
Or, this may work as well-- make an alias of your PT5 app, put it on the desktop and drag your session files onto the alias.
Don't think I'd recommend the Panther upgrade on a 400MHz machine unless you'd also consider a processor upgrade. Running it on my machine previous to the 1.4 upgrade was pretty painful-- I don't know how people with G3's can do it. --- c

Re: I thought this was easy...
PT 6 & 5 should not be installed on the same system partition. PT5 should be on an OS9 partition, PT6 should be on an OSX partition - and you should have a separate dedicated audio drive for your audio files if you want any kind of performance at all.
You’ve got some work ahead of you I’m afraid... I would - Backup all my data, -boot from the OS9 disc, -erase the system drive, -partition the drive into 2 partitions. -Re-install OS9 on one partition and apply all of the proper updates to get up to OS9.2.2. -re-install PT5 on that OS9 partition and apply all the proper updates to that. -read your PT manual for proper system configuration to run PT5 on OS9. (there are several things you need to do to the system as far as tweaks & settings). Then, if you want to “try” OSX w/ PT6 - You’ll need to install OSX and PT6 on the other partition. FYI - I wouldn’t use OSX on a 400Mhz machine with PT6. I know you want to use OS9 right now. Just a heads up. If you wanted to run PT6 in the future, you’ll need a faster machine for sure. Re: I thought this was easy...
dkrz speaks the truth. I might add that unless you're really curious about OSX from a geek perspective, I wouldn't even bother with the second partition. That machine will not run OSX well at all. Is that an AGP or PCI G4? If it is a PCI G4, you'd be able to play around with it running X, but it will feel sluggish. AGP will be a little better. Either way it'd be like running XP on a PII 233.
