Default Compatibility..Final Word

Hi Guys,

Pretty Please..... Would everyone who reads this just quickly post your hardware configuration success stories here? I'd really like to see, in one spot, a low down of all completely successful setups(including drive types, chipset type etc.). Please only post if you are satisfied with your DIGI001/Win98SE performance. I've seen some successful setups which do not conform to the prescribed standard, and would like to try to find some commonalities between them. This could be interesting to all, including DigiDesign. I still plan on building a digi spec pc, but who knows.

Thanks to all in advance,
Darrin

Here goes nothing:

Hewlett Packard Pavilion 8613
600Mhz PIII (don't know the m/board)
256MB P100 SDRAM (2x 128)

Win98 and WinME on seperate partitions
Quantum Fireball 10Gb system drive (IDE bus1)
HP CD-RW (IDE bus2)

Digi001 in PCI#1

Promise ATA100 adapter card in PCI#2
IBM Deskstar audio drives (30GB & 46GB) 7200 rpm / 8.5ms / run from the ATA100 card

Tekram UW-315 SCSI controller in PCI#3 (for zip/jaz/external backup drive)

Aureal Vortex (cheap & nasty) soundcard in PCI#4 for CD audio playback and system sounds (normally disabled though)

Uprated power supply (forget which one)

Performance with Logic Platinum is 24 to 32 tracks at 48Khz / 24bit and the same number of plugins. (I tend to use the busses heavily; with global effects like compressors/reverbs/delays/phaser etc on the bus; and still have room for filter/EQ/sfx on each track)

Well now, let's see.
ABIT BE6-II, Rev. 1.2 w/'UJ' (9/5/2000) BIOS update
P3-800E (100FSB)
256MB SDRAM, PC100

Promise ATA 100, IDE controller (Data drive only)
System drive: Western Digital-Caviar, 13GB, running on onboard controller Master-IDE, ch. 1
Data drive: Seagate-Barracuda II, 30.8GB, running on Promise controller
CD-R/CD-ROM: Yamaha-CD8824, running on onboard controller Master-IDE, ch. 2
3.5" Teac floppy (which will be leaving soon)

AGP/PCI Buss:
Video: Diamond Fire GL1000 Pro, AGP, running the latest and the LAST set of drivers from Diamond/3D-Labs
Networking: 3COM-XL10/100, installed in PCI slot #2
Digi001: Installed in PCI slot#4
Controller: Promise ATA100 installed in PCI slot #5

Rack mount case with 350 watt (Nuclear controls) power supply

Fresh install of 98SE w/service pack 1 & Direct X 8.0. All required Win. config. changes as required by Digi install guide book. Cakewalk 9 Pro, Office 97, Corel Draw 8, Adaptec CD-R software loaded only. Then installed Digi LAST. I also loaded DVERB.

I run this computer on my network. But I don't recommend doing this during any recording. Especially tracking. Due to the possiblity of 'someone' trying to gain access to any shared files with Digig is recording and forcing the CPU to alter the access to the PCI buss. But it makes upgrading drivers and such a breeze. So much so I have no need for my 3.5" floppy anymore. Notice I don't run a second sound card.

The Digi001 system (at least mine anyhow) does everything that it advertises. I have had ZERO trouble since loading/building this machine (9/9/2000). I guess I'm lucky.

Hi
Just purshased an HP 8754 to run the 001, (pretty similar to what you have) . It is running WinMe and so I get that "device heap" messsage when I installed 001. I am now considering doing what you have done and setup a dual boot with Win98SE. How did you setup you computer for dual boot with WinMe already installed?

Very much appreciate your help!

Thanks

Hey Foreigndog,

I have a very similar system setup. You mentioned in another post that you got yours from Wave Digital. I modeled my system after the specs on their website. I am trying to tweak a couple of performance issues and was hoping you might be able to supply me with some information regarding your system:

Into which PCI Slot do you have your Digi card inserted? Which PCI slot for your ata66 controller? Is the Digi sharing an IRQ with any other device? Which IRQ is it using?

Thanks for your help,

Bentley Ousley

This system usually gets me 24 tracks, however it's a little underpowered. Mostof my sessions are less than 16 tracks though anyway, and I do get 16 trax+ plugins no prob.

No-name setup:

-ASUS P2B, 440BX chipset, Award BIOS version 1011 (I had to upgrade this myself to work with my 45 GB hard drive, it was a nightmare)
-Intel Pentium II-400
-256 MB RAM
-System drive 20 18GB Maxtor 7200 RPM
-Audio Drive IBM 45GB 7200 RPM, partitioned into 10 GB (samples) and 35 GB (sessions)
-AGP-nVidia RIVA TNT
-slot 1 empty
-slot 2-DIGI 001 PCI card
-slot 3 empty
-Slot 4 3Com 10baseT Ethernet card
-Slot 5 Creative Soundblaster 64 AWE PCI
-slot6 empty

WinME (apparently) allows dual boot; giving you the option to decided which OS you want upon startup. However; I couldn't get this to work and have gone about it the long way:

Get hold of a cheap program called 'Partition Magic' which will partition any drive either for storage or system use. When you want to change back to the "other" OS; you run partition magic / hide the current partition / make the other the partition active and reboot. Just make sure that 'Partition Magic' is installed on both sides of your PC otherwise you are buggered!

If you want more specific details on how to partition your drive - mail me directly ICQ#55087283
