Re: Recording Latin Music
Well, there is no right or wrong way to do it. I've just finished recording a CD of 'world music'.
Included in some of the tracks are congas, darabuka, timbale & some middle eastern & other percussion instrumemts I'd never heard of before. I tried a TLM 103, the afore mentioned AKG's & good old SM57's. You will need to compress as you record as most of these instruments have big transients, the trick is not to over do the compression, and most important of all-Get a good performance in a good sounding room. Re: Recording Latin Music
I just recorded some latin music today... whole band.. 1 RCA 44.. 1 track... sounded amazing.
Timbales.. 2 KM54's.. about 3 to 4 feet above the timbales on either side with a pair of 1073's and no compression. Rail

Re: Recording Latin Music
i just tried this: i used 2 AKG418 under the each one...(i hope you can understand me) and then i put an AT4033 as over...the sound was beautifull and have a wide stereo...with a lot of presence of the rolls in the drums...and the cymbal and block sounds glorious...i forgot! the cascara sound really shiny...of course, we had a great timbal (Tito Puente model) and a great player... Re: Recording Latin Music
Any good mics will get a decent sound from the top skins, but not many people seem to mic the bottom ends where a lot of bass energy comes out. Something like a D112 on the floor between a pair a congas can really beef up the sound. You have to be careful not to overdo it though, as combining lots of bass sounds can really clutter up a mix.

Re: Recording Latin Music
well, to be honest, for the congas, i just used a pair of SM57 on the top of each one...and sounds really good...
