Default clock crackle?

I have been using the 001 for over a year with good success. I have recently encountered a problem that I can't seem to resolve and am looking for some help from the guru's.

I have a mac G4 -400 recently upgraded to a 1 Gig Sonnet card, I have 768 mgs of ram and 80 gig ATA drives for audio and am using version 6.01 with OSX.

I have a Tascam DA 38 connected via an IF-TAD converter to the optical ports of the DIGI 001. I am trying to record from the DA to pro tools and continually get pops and stops in the playback as I arm each track for record.

This approach has worked since I started using the system but since my upgrades I cannot get the pops and cracks to go away.

I have Pro tools set to Optical sync and the DA as the master. I changed word cables as I thought that might be the problem. I tried recording analogue from the DA and that works fine so it's not the tape drive. I've done pitch changes on the DA to see if it resets the clock setting (I've read all the manuals, etc). I have also recorded from protools to the DA38 and that direction seems to work fine as well. Could it be the TDIF cable or is there something different in version 6 and OSX software that works different then prior versions?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have been trying to find a fix and according to the Tascam forum they feel that this is a software issue since this has only occurred since I upgraded to OSX and Pro tools 6.01. Is there any driver or other change in the softward that can effect this? Could an upgrade of the Sonnett card be the culprit?

I have been pulling my hair our for hours on this one.

Hi,

Have you checked the clock settings in ProTools as well as the DA38? Are they both set to the same setting, i.e., 16bit, 44.1khz? That is usually the reason for the crackles. I've been able to connect my ADAT optically to the 001 and as long as both devices have the same clock settings, it works fine.

Best of luck.

Walter

Thanks Walter,

I have checked both units and they are at the same settings. I guess I will try plugging my CD player via optical cable into the digi card directly. If that works then it will not be a digi issue but something else. If it soesn't work then it might be the card itself. Thanks for your ideas..

jammin daddy, have you ever worked out what the problem was?
i face almost the same here. clocking pro tools 6 optical from an rme adi-8 converter results in horrible digital clicks. i swapped out my sonnet encore g4/1ghz, put in the original cpu (466mhz) and everything was fine again. (except the speed of the system of course).
this is the second sonnet card i´m trying out, because i had the same trouble with the 1,2 ghz i had ordered before. i contacted sonnet support, who had no idea but suggesting to try out another card.
otherwise the card works great but if i can´t use it with pro tools appropriatly its quite useless for me.
