no audio when no R select

I am very new at Pro Tools and somewhat confused by it overall but still learning. Anyway, I am hooking a mic in mic line1 and can not hear the audio unless I push the Track Record Enable in Pro Tools LE. The instructions do not specify this so I am unsure if this is the way it should be. It seems unproductive. Am I doing something obviously wrong?

You are not doing anything wrong.

The R button is the track arm switch. You have to select this to let let audio pass through.

If you are trying to play along with some previously recorded tracks, press ctrl-K, this will put Protools into input monitoring, so you can hear yourself play on into the mic pre, and your previously recorded tracks--without recording. It's like practicing with the other tracks.
