Default ADAT tracks into PT 003 with external clock

Perhaps this information had been talked about before, so forgive if the question is repetitive.

I have a PT LE 003 rack system with an external word clock. I was wanting to input some ADAT tracks (from a 20 bit ADAT XT) into Pro Tools while having the external clock engaged. Trying to get the best source signal possible into Pro Tools.

Problem: Syncing to an external clock while trying to input ADAT tracks into Pro Tools doesn't seem to work. The only way that works is to select

Optical Format = ADAT
Clock Source = optical

Selecting WORD CLOCK in the clock source results in clicks and pops. This is what I'd like to ba able to do?

Anyone have this problem or a solution?
