Little surprise for laptop users and 002
I was suprised to read in the 002 compato docs posted on 9/20/02 the following entry under Mac Powerbooks:
"The 800 MHz PowerBook G4 does not work properly with the hardware buffer size of 64 when used at 44.1/48 KHz. Additionally, the 128 buffer size also does not work at 88.2/96 KHz. These are the "lowest buffer settings" at each respective sample rate. Any other buffer setting is fine." Curiously all other powerbooks (including my 1st rev 400 TiG4) can use the lowest buffer settings - i.e. lowest latency setting, but my 1 week old 800 DVI TiG4 can't. Apparently this may be a problem with certain windows laptops as well - as is listed in the read me that came with the 002. Does anybody else think that this isn't right. Digi, can you please clarify this. Also another minor picky point - Digi - bad move to not include a hard copy paper PTLE manual and just go to electronic version of your included docs. For a $2500 DAW,and one that is aimed at 1st time PTLE buyers, you really could throw in a printed manual. OK, back to making music, at gulp the higher buffer settings. |

Re: Little surprise for laptop users and 002
Hi
Thanks for the heads up regarding the buffer quirk with the 800 Ti G4. I am actually thinking about getting a Digi 002 and an 800 Ti G4 to replace a lot of gear in my little home studio. What is the next higher latency above the two that do not work on the 800 G4? How noticable is it? Or even more generally how is the latency on the Digi 002, specifically when tracking and monitioring through the machine? I have always monitered through my analog mixer at home and avoided the latency thing all around. Anyone out there with intial impressions on the robustness of the Digi 002 package? We use TDM PT at work, but I am mainly a Cubase guy at home looking to get some form of PT up and running... Thanks -N Thanks |

If you really need a printed manual just fire up your printer and print off the sections you need/want. Of course this also means you can carry the manual along in pdf form on your powerbook and refer to it when needed. |

Re: Little surprise for laptop users and 002
You can use the 002 with the 800 MHz Titanium PowerBook at the following hardware buffer settings:
128 samples at 44.1/48 KHz 256 samples at 88.2/96 KHz It's interesting that the 400 MHz PowerBook was able to use the lowest buffer settings (64 samples at 44.1/48 KHz, and 128 samples at 88.2/96 KHz). There is more 1394 interrupt latency on the 800 MHz version of the PowerBook, and this is why the very lowest buffer settings are not usable. Yeah I'll trade my 400 TiBook for a 800 one as well.

Its a bit of a bummer to find that you have a top of the line 800mhz PB that can't use the lowest latency settings for the 002. I did test it last pm, and immediately got the hardware interupt error message and was OK at higher settings. To me, one of the advantages of the 002 with PTLE 5.3.2 is the really low buffer settings with really low latency. |

Re: Little surprise for laptop users and 002
I am about to buy a 1 GHz G4 PowerBook, and was considering Pro Tools 002. I don't understand anything about latency settings, and need some clarification. Is there some problem or limitation using 002 with my laptop?
Would the 001 or Mbox be more compatable? Thanks. |
