Default oktava mics

Hi,

Looking for a place to buy oktava's, wasn't able to find them on sweetwater, musiciansfriend, or samash.

Did a search here on the duc and found sound-room.com. they have a bunch of oktava's, and some capsules in case you want to mod them yourself. Chris reccomended a few of their mics highly, especially the MKL101.

So my question is, should I read anything into the fact that the mainstream places no longer carry them? I'm pretty sure they used to right?

soundroom sounds cool, especially since I want to get into some diy stuff.

I did the search because I'm gearing up to do a trad Irish project, and I want a good stereo pair, I was thinking of the mc012's.

thoughts?

thanks!

bp

p.s., I was inspired to try some trad Irish by hanging out with my good high school buddy Hanz Araki.

The record was recorded by Garey Shelton in Seattle.

Hey Jason,
Guitar center runs specials on Octavas from time to time. Best to hold out for when they go on sale because you can really save a lot, or get two for one etc...

I would suggest calling Full Compass. The new ad I got from them in the mail has the price for the 3 capsule matched stereo set of mk012's for $394 list, followed by "call for price". Every time I've called them for a price it has been very good, and usually less than anybody else. The cardiod only matched stereo set is $256 list (w/"call for price"). I tried to find oktava mics on their website, and couldn't though.

i think for theater-like stuff the Oktava's are pretty good. They have a very clean sound, and are fairly quiet.... I have used mine as mic's to record spoken word from a few yards distance (mic's had to be hidden...) and also a singer/songwriter style song on acoustic guitar and female vocals. Turned out quite nice...
