Default need to record guit + voice live - what approach?

Singer/guitarist (a la the late Mr. Cash) wants to be recorded live playing his guitar and singing. What's a good solid method for doing this? What mic or mics to use? The guitar is going to show up in the vocal mic . . . . any thoughts appreciated

Joseph

ok ok be that way..

You might try playing with a few different mic combo's to get the best sound.
Since you stated the obvious in your first post .."the guitar will be in the voc etc.."
don't try to avoid the leakage, try to make it work for you.
In this situation u have no control... so let go. It will all be ok in the end.
Set up the gtr/voc with whatever mic's you would normally use or like.
I would use a U67 / M149 / C12 / 251 or something like that on the voc,
hell put a C12 on the gtr as well... mic's that have good sounding "off-axis"
coloration work well here. Try messing around with placement and kick
the mic's into "omni" and see if that helps a bit as well.
You might try putting the voc mic at a slight angle up towards the mouth/away from the gtr.
That's about it ... there ain't no punching in on stuff like this.
How men used to make records

I've seen guys set up all kinds of whacko stuff & waste all kinds of time when doing this kinda thing...
I guess that depends if your by the day or hourly
Anyways, ... boards under someone's mouth to cut leakage when they are trying to perform
the song or mic's that point at extreme angles upwards towards the mouth & down at the gtr.
You get the idea.... Forget all that, it never works and sounds like hell anyway.

If something is not right performance-wise just make 'em do another take and cut it together.
Let 'em bitch, they will anyway.. this being an artist stuff is hard work yanno.
That's what your gonna end up doing anyway so save yourself some pain and go in knowing that.
Make sure the artist knows it as well, most anyone doing something like this is already fully aware but
sometimes that "oh I forgot" or the famous "don't we have a plug-in that can remove all the leakage" gene kicks in.
This is one of the few times when you can't yell "that sucked, come on in" from the control room

think about getting a box from Little Labs called the IBP phase box ... will allow you to properly align phase (not just 180 in or out) between the two mics ... i am going to pick one up this week, i will let you know how it works. i am getting it for the same purpose.

peace john
