Dual digi001\'s?
Is it possible to run a pair of digi001's (with 2 PCI cards) simultaneously on a Mac to get 16 channels of input to ProTools?

Re: Dual digi001\'s?
You can get 16 channels with one 001 using the ADAT ligthtpipe inputs.

Re: Dual digi001\'s?
You can actually get 18 inputs if you use the SPDIF. I use the Digimax LT for the extra pre's and 8 more ins,but prefer the SPDIF for an outboard Reverb[Lexicon MPX 200] Works great and saves a ton of CPU power.

Re: Dual digi001\'s?
But if your next question is 2 001's on one mac for 36 inputs, the answer is no. 2 001's on 2 machines and some MTC is possible I've read tho.

Re: Dual digi001\'s?
Hmmm... yes, interesting, but then I'd have to get 8 A/D's to feed it (I see the Digimax LT comment). But that's input only, and I'm using an external mixer for mixdown right now, and I was hoping I could double my output channels as well as my input with 2 digi001's (giddyap ebay!), but it sounds like that won't work. Oh well, I don't have the money right now, anyway.
But I think I have gleaned from this discussion that I can get 2 more inputs with existing equipment if I use my minidisc as A/D (I think the optical output monitors the analog input) and go in through the S/PDIF inputs; can I get two extra outputs to my board the same way (back through the minidisc)? Yeah, I know there's data compression issues with the minidisc, but if I am selective about what I send that route I think I can get away with it for now, and two more I/O's would help me quite a bit.

Re: Dual digi001\'s?
The minidisc player as 2 more I/O sounds feasible. You wont have any data compression issues since you are not recordin gto the minidisc, but you will be at the mercy of the quality of the A/D conversion in the minidisc unit.
I use a Lexicon MPX500 Effects unit as an analog to RCA SPDIF converter all the time when multitracking live to get my 17th and 18th input and it works fine. Ive got the Digimax LT and its great for extra inputs and extra mic pres, but if you want ins and outs theres a good bit of stuff out there that converts both ways, some without preamps and affordable.

In tiger there is supposed to be an update for coreaudio to use more than 1 sound card although you will not get this to work in PTLE Im confident it will work in logic and other daws if they support when tiger comes |

Re: Dual digi001\'s?
OK, I have had some success; I was able to record 10 channels simultaneously using the 8 inputs on my digi001 plus the S/PDIF from my minidisc unit. Just put in a disc, put it in rec/pause, and the 2 channel analog input is passed to the optical output. Run it through a CO2 box (optical <=> rca S/PDIF) and into the S/PDIF input of the digi001 and onto PT channels 9 and 10. Cool. Works like a charm.
On (external) mixdown, however, analog channels 1 and 2 are combined with the S/PDIF L and R, so I can only get 8 channels out. Is there any way to disable this so I can get 10 discrete output channels? I'd like to route the S/PDIF output back through the minidisc D/A to my board with channels 9 and 10. Assuming my friend who is a ProTools/digi journeyman is correct, and the answer is no, why do they do this? I could assign things this way if I wanted, but why do I have to?
