Default Surround panner by JL Cooper

Good morning everyone:

Does anyone here use this panner with PT 10 (or 11), and how does that work for you? Do you like it?

http://www.avalive.com/Avid/9900-554...ductDetail.php

There have been a few threads on this and other panners, but not very recently, and it appears that this particular model is now no longer manufactured (they only have a surround panner for Yamaha's Nuage).

Before paying more than $ 1,000 I'd like to make triple sure it actually works. I have PT 10 with the complete production toolkit (as well as PT 11 but w/o surround) and a surround speaker setup. I can't find anything about officially supported hardware for PT10 and given that it is no longer supported by JL Cooper I doubt that they will want to much if anything about compatibility with recent versions of Pro Tools.

Many thanks!

Hi Peter,

I am using this silver panner with PT HD 10.3.5 without problems, via Emagic MT4 MIDI Interface. Makes panning nice, but the workflow isn't the fastest. This is not a motorized panner, but a touch-sensitive one, just to mention.

Greetings,
Matthias

Thanks for the feedback Matthias.

Is there even an alternative that works with PT 10 (motorized or not)? The only thing I could find was a hardware unit that is only compatible with the D Command which I do not have. I have seen something about a wish list for the Euphonix / Avid Artist series, but that is just a wish list thing.

Thanks!

Well, now that you're asking :
Spanner has an iPad remote app.

"motorised" and touch sensitive with intuitive realtime feedback.
multitouch so you can control as many channels as you like.
iPad follows the Spanners open in Pro Tools - so as soon as you choose the plugin from the mixer you'll see it mounting on the iPad.

You may find the joysticks limiting once you've tried this.

Hmm ... but will an iPad communicate with a PC? I am all PC now and don't want to switch to macs just for the surround panning.

Another thing is that I prefer the touch and feel of a physical controller over something like a touchpad or iPad.

I like my JL Cooper panner very much thank you. Looks clunky, its heavy, it's got a bunch of knobs and buttons that I may use once or twice a year, but the stick works very well. Dedicated to one task, its always there, and most importantly always "on" when I want it.
